Help text
This is the estimated number of children aged 5 to 16 (Year 1 to 11 pupils) who are active outside of school hours, for at least an average of 30 minutes a day. Only activity of at least moderate intensity is included. This is taken from one or more broad activity categories of active travel, walking, cycling, riding a scooter, active play/informal activity, fitness, dance, and sporting activities.

Government policy aims that children and young people should get 30 minutes of their daily physical activity through the school day and 30 minutes outside of school, with activity being of at least moderate intensity. For at-school activity, every day is five days (weekdays), for outside school, activity every day is seven days. Moderate activity is defined as activity where you raise your heart rate and feel a little out of breath. Vigorous activity is defined as when you are out of breath or are sweating - you may not be able to say more than a few words without pausing for breath (pupils were asked whether it made them hot or tired).

When making comparisons between figures, some differences seen may not be significant differences and so a degree of caution should be made before making conclusions. The survey was adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic to include home schooling.

The survey sample is randomly selected from the Royal Mail’s Postal Address File ensuring a very high coverage of private residential addresses. The target sample size for each English local authority (excluding the City of London and Isles of Scilly) is 500 returns. Data may be suppressed for an area where the threshold of 30 is not reached.
