Public health Function

Autism strategy (1728) Service

Development and publication of a strategy which sets out the vision, aims, objectives and plans of both health and social care for adults aged 18+ years who have or are seeking a diagnosis of autism.

Bathing waters (1775) Service

A local authority is responsible for publishing information about any bathing waters (coastal or otherwise) in it's area. Information to be published includes the water quality classification and any public health information (health risks) relating to the use of the water for swimming. Information is published between May 15th and September 30th each year.

Child measurement (1748) Service

The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) measures the weight and height of children in reception class (aged 4 to 5 years) and year 6 (aged 10 to 11 years) to assess overweight children and obese levels within primary schools. This data can be used at a national level to support local public health initiatives and inform the local planning and delivery of services for children.

Childhood immunisation (924) Service

The immunisation service provides a programme of childhood vaccinations against diseases such as polio and measles. It also provides vaccines against seasonal and pandemic influenza (flu) and Pneumococcal infections.

Contraception (1749) Service

Advice and information about contraception and access to emergency contraception services.

Health advice (199) Service

Advice and information on health issues of concern to individuals and the community. Providing advice on how to live active and healthy lives for all members of the community. The local authority may work with other agencies (health services) and organisations to provide this service.

Health and wellbeing strategy (1688) Service

Established and hosted by local authorities, health and wellbeing boards bring together the NHS, public health, adult social care and children's services, including elected representatives and Local Healthwatch, to plan and form a strategy of how best to meet the needs of their local population and tackle local inequalities in health.

Health care in prisons (1447) Service

The local authority works with other providers to deliver their public health and adult social care functions to prisoners in the local area.

Health checks (1747) Service

Free health checks are provided to anyone eligible between the ages of 40 and 74 tro enable them to take steps to maintain or improve their health.

HIV / AIDS support for adults (202) Service

This service provides a confidential service, counselling and emotional support, financial advice and practical advice to people diagnosed with HIV.

Infectious disease investigation (435) Service

Investigation of notifications of infectious diseases such as food poisoning received from GPs, the public, businesses and other local authorities.

Midwifery and maternity services (927) Service

Midwifery and maternity offer services to families within children's centres and local health centres to provide services to families in locations close to their home. Midwifery and health visiting teams provide essential support throughout every stage of pregnancy and through the early years.

Public health strategic needs assessment (1745) Service

An assessment of the current and future health and social care needs of the local community. A joint strategic health assessment is carried out by the local authority and their partners in public health and should consider wider factors that impact on their communities health and wellbeing, and local assets that can help to improve outcomes and reduce inequalities

Rapid lateral flow testing sites (1827) Service

Testing sites offering rapid lateral flow test for COVID-19 available for local residents to book a test are administered by local authorities

Sexual health (1395) Service

Clinics providing advice on the treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.

Stopping smoking (1746) Service

Information, advice and help to assist local residents who smoke to stop smoking.

Water fluoridation schemes (1776) Service

Water fluoridation is considered as a safe and effective measure to help people improve their oral health. Local authorities can implement, vary or terminate water fluoridation schemes in their area. The authority is responsible for operating any such schemes in their area.
