Percentage of 16-18 cohort in sustained education, apprenticeship or employment (4690) Metric type
- Help text
- This is the percentage of key stage 5 (KS5) cohort (young people aged 16, 17 or 18) at all state-funded mainstream schools in a sustained education, employment or training destination.
To be counted in a destination, young people have to have sustained participation for a 6 month period in the destination year.
Until the 2017/18, only students who had entered A levels or other approved level 3 qualifications at the end of their 16 to 18 study were included in this measure. This has now expanded to include students taking qualifications at level 2 and below as it gives a fuller picture of what 18 year olds go on to do after leaving secondary education. In addition, previously students were allocated to their school or college in the same year as they were deemed to have reached the end of 16 to 18 study. For the 16-18 measure from 2017/18 a flexible year methodology was introduced to pick up students who didn't attend an institution in their final year.
State-funded mainstream schools maintained by the local authority, including city technology colleges (CTCs). Excludes pupil referral units (PRUs), alternative provision (AP), hospital schools, maintained and non-maintained special schools, independent schools, independent special schools and independent schools approved to take pupils with special educational needs (SEN).
Timeliness of data: There is a time lag between students completing their key stage and destination measures being published. A year has to elapse and datasets have to be combined before measuring sustained participation in education or training, which causes this time lag.
Small numbers fewer than 6 pupils in the cohort, or small numbers (1's and 2's) in the reporting lines and the resulting percentages are suppressed.
