- This is the Shigella spp. diagnoses among men who have sex with men (defined as adult men without a recent history of foreign travel) as a rate per 100,000 male population aged 16 and above. Shigellosis, also known as bacillary dysentery, is caused by infection with Shigella bacteria. It can cause severe illness, requiring admission to hospital for treatment. Shigella is a notifiable infection reported through laboratory surveillance. Data appies only to people resident in England.
Figures are from UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) national Second Generation Surveillance System (SGSS) for laboratory surveillance of infectious disease.
Numbers between 1 and 4 with a population less than 10,000 are suppressed. Where counts for Isles of Scilly or City of London are between 1 and 4, these are combined with Cornwall or Hackney respectively.
