Help text
Total number of classroom teachers employed by state-funded secondary schools presented as the number of full-time equivalent positions (FTE). This includes all full and part-time, qualified and unqualified, classroom teachers.

These results are inclusive of all state-funded secondary schools including academies, converter academies and sponsor led academies, free schools, special schools and pupil referral units for secondary school aged pupils, as well as technical colleges and studio schools. Any centrally employed classroom teachers working in in state-funded secondary schools are also included in these figure as are the classroom teachers of any middle schools deemed secondary schools. All through schools are deemed secondary and are included in these figures.

FTE results are calculated by converting part-time staff’s hours into a full-time staff equivalent. For example, if a standard full-time working week was 37 hours and a part-time classroom teacher works 18.5 hours, their FTE would be 0.5.

Full time headcount + part time FTE = total FTE classroom teachers. This provides a better indication of total labour input than a simple headcount.
