Help text
Total number of classroom teachers employed by state-funded schools presented as the number of full-time equivalent positions (FTE). This includes all full and part-time, qualified and unqualified, classroom teachers.

These results are inclusive of all state-funded schools; state-funded nursery, primary, secondary schools including academies, converter academies and sponsor led academies, free schools, technical colleges, studio schools, special schools and pupil referral units. Any centrally employed classroom teachers working in state-funded schools are also included in these figures.

Middle schools are classed as deemed, i.e. as either primary or secondary. All through schools are deemed secondary.

FTE results are calculated by converting part-time classroom teacher’s hours into a full-time staff equivalent. For example, if a standard full-time working week was 37 hours and a part-time classroom teacher works 18.5 hours, their FTE would be 0.5.

Full time headcount + part time FTE = total FTE classroom teachers. This provides a better indication of total labour input than a simple headcount.
