- The weighted estimate of the proportion of residents in each area taking a visit to the natural environment for health or exercise purposes. Visits to the natural environment are defined as time spent "out of doors" e.g. in open spaces in and around towns and cities, including parks, canals and nature areas; the coast and beaches; and the countryside including farmland, woodland, hills and rivers. This could be anything from a few minutes to all day. It may include time spent close to home or workplace, further afield or while on holiday in England. However this does not include: routine shopping trips or; time spent in own garden.
During each survey interview, respondents are asked to indicate how many visits they have taken to the natural environment in the last 7 days. If any visits have been taken in this period, they are then asked to provide details of one visit (if more than one has been taken, the visit asked about is randomly selected).
Normally MENE data is weighted using a standard set of demographic weights which include age, sex, socio-economic status and the regional distribution of the English adult population. While this weighting approach allows for the production of robust, representative data at the national and regional level, it is not designed to allow for the production of data at a lower geographic level. As such, for the purposes of the PHOF indicator, a new series of weights were produced for every Upper Tier Local Authority in England using the following local level data. This is a slightly more limited range of variables than used in the national weighting, a reflection of the limited data available at the local level and the need to obtain an efficient weighting solution. When weights have been applied to each area the weighting efficiency has been calculated and in turn the effective sample size.
