Gap in life expectancy at birth between each local authority and England as a whole (male) (12000) Metric type
- Help text
- This indicator measures inequalities in life expectancy between each local authority area and that of England as a whole. It shows the absolute difference in years in life expectancy between the two areas for the given time period. A negative figure means that the life expectancy of the area is lower than England, and a positive figure shows that the area has a higher life expectancy than England. A desirable trend for local authorities with lower life expectancy than England, is a reduction in the size of the negative figure.
Life expectancy at birth is a measure of the average number of years a person would expect to live based on contemporary mortality rates. For a particular area and time period, it is an estimate of the average number of years a newborn baby would survive if he or she experienced the age-specific mortality rates for that area and time period throughout his or her life. The life expectancy at birth figure for England was subtracted from life expectancy figures for each area in turn to give the absolute gap, in years, for each area.
