Help text
This is number of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) excluding injections prescribed by GP and Sexual and Reproductive Health Services. It is sourced from PHE based on NHS Digital SRHAD data, NHS Business Services Authority ePACT2 prescribing data and ONS mid-year population estimates

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) Clinical Guideline CG30 advises that LARC methods, such as contraceptive injections, implants, the intra-uterine system (IUS) or the intrauterine device (IUD), are highly effective as they do not rely on daily compliance and are more cost effective than condoms and the pill. Implants, IUS and IUD can remain in place for up to 3, 5 or 10 years depending on the type of product. This indicator excludes injections because: - injections rely on timely repeat visits/administration within the year and consequently have a higher failure rate than the other LARC methods - injections are easily given thus do not require the resources and training that other LARC methods require - injections are outside local authority contracts.
