Help text
This is the number of full-time higher education student enrolments for the academic year. It covers higher education (HE) providers who submit a full student record data return to HESA, the Higher Education Statistics Agency. This is the cumulative total of students where one or more HE institutions are located within an area. It is not the total number of students who may reside in a local authority. The postcode for the administrative address, of the main campus, has been used to determine which local authority the HE is attributed to. It was not possible to split student numbers where the HE institution has a satellite campus or accommodation outside the council boundary.

This total includes students at publicly funded HE providers, HE students on designated courses at alternative providers, the privately funded University of Buckingham and HE students at Welsh FE colleges. FE provider level data for England, Scotland and Northern Ireland is not included.

The number of HE students covers all undergraduate, postgraduate (taught) and postgraduate (research) enrolments. It includes UK and non-UK students enrolled. It is not possible to distinguish whether the student is resident, commuting, distance learning, flexible learning or distributed learning.

Rounding of numbers to the nearest multiple of 5 and a suppression strategy has been applied by HESA, designed to prevent the disclosure of personal information about any individual.

HESA are the designated data body for England. HESA works on behalf of HE providers in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to help them fulfil their statutory obligations to provide information to the funding and regulatory bodies in each administration. Data definitions sometimes change over time and may affect the validity of time series comparisons.
