Help text
This indicator is a crude rate of GP Surgeries per 10,000 population in a local authority. It was derived by the LGA to give a sense of health service provision in each authority and was sourced from the National General Practice Profiles Practice Inclusion list by Public Health England (http://tinyurl.com/odfeocw). This list provides address details of GP surgeries in England. Postcodes were matched to a local authority using the ONS National Statistics Postcode Lookup (NSPL) (https://geoportal.statistics.gov.uk), providing an estimate of the number of surgeries within each local authority. To calculate the crude ratio of GP surgeries in each authority per 10,000 population, the number of surgeries in each authority was multiplied by 10,000 and then divided by the ONS population count for the authority.

Criteria for inclusion on the National General Practice Profiles Practice Inclusion list (Public Health England) are: The practice is listed in the Quality and Outcomes Framework.; the practice is listed in ADS (Attribution Data Set GP-Registered Populations, HSCIC); the practice list size is > 900 patients. These revised (2014) criteria mean that very few practices have been excluded.
