Number of deaths (month) (22346) Metric type

Help text
This is the number of deaths registered in a calendar month, by area of usual residence.

Deaths occurring in England and Wales are registered on the General Register Office's Registration Online (RON) system. Figures remain provisional until final annual data are released, over one year after.

There are a small number of death registrations of individuals whose usual residence is outside England and Wales, as well as where the place of usual residence is either missing or not yet fully coded. A very small number of death registrations can sometimes have region of usual residence coded but no local area coding. Consequently counts for local areas may not always sum to the regional count.

From January 2021 onwards, figures for the latest month are based on data available (i.e. deaths that have been registered and processed) up to the 8th of the following month. For example data for June 2021 is based on the most up-to-date information available on the 8th July 2021. Previously (since August 2018), figures for the latest month were based on data available up to the 19th of the following month. Bank Holidays could affect the number of registrations made within those months.
