Help text
This is the percentage of people aged 25 to 64 obtaining degrees of those whose parents did not have degrees (upwards mobility). Upward absolute educational mobility is when someone has higher level qualifications than their parents. Downward mobility is when they have lower qualifications.

The Social Mobility Commission (SMC) publishes an annual report on the State of the Nation. Mobility outcomes look at where people end up, typically in their 40s or 50s. They look at people’s socio-economic class, income, education and housing. An individual experiences intergenerational social mobility when their life outcomes, such as their type of occupation, differ from their parents’. Change across generations, and the link between parents and children, are the core of social mobility. Change can be upwards or downwards.

Absolute educational mobility figures are sourced from the UK Household Longitudinal Survey (UKHLS).

This data is published at Region level. The region used is where respondents currently live, not where they grew up. Because of this, the percentages may reflect graduates moving in from, or out to, other areas.
