Percentage of adult inpatients to a place other than their usual place of residence who have been in hospital for longer than 21 days (19985) Metric type
- Help text
- Prolonged stays in hospital are bad for patients, especially for those who are frail or elderly. Spending a long time in hospital can lead to an increased risk of falling, sleep deprivation, catching infections and sometimes mental and physical deconditioning. Despite this, nearly 350,000 patients spend more than three weeks in acute hospitals each year. Efforts to reduce the length of time someone needs to stay in hospital aims to provide patients with a better care experience by ensuring they are discharged from hospital without unnecessary delay.
This measure is the percentage of all discharges to a place other than their usual place of residence during the month following a stay in an acute bed where the patient is aged 18 and over and where the length of stay is 21 days or more. ‘Usual place of residence’ can include private homes or care homes, but should relate to where the person was living prior to their admission to hospital.
This data is not currently collected at a local authority footprint in national reporting, so has been derived by the Better Care Fund team using information recorded through hospital patient administration systems, available through the Secondary Uses Service (SUS) database. This enables identification of the local authority footprint associated with the patient’s usual place of residence.
