Gross value added (GVA) generated from production other than manufacturing enterprises in the area (10257) Metric type
- Help text
- This is the total Gross value added (GVA) generated from production other than manufacturing enterprises in the area. GVA is a measure of the increase in the value of the economy due to the production of goods and services.
The regional estimates of gross value added are measured using the income approach, sometimes denoted by GVA(I). This involves adding up the income generated by UK resident individuals or corporations in the production of goods and services. It is calculated gross of deductions for consumption of fixed capital, which is the amount of fixed assets used up in the process of production in any period.
The local authority estimates use a simplified methodology in which components of GVA(I) at NUTS3 level are broken down to local authorities according to proportions calculated from the following datasets: Business Register Employment Survey (BRES); Annual Business Survey (ABS);Population and Housing value.
It is important to note that in each of the datasets used to calculate these proportions, data are only available at local authority level for the latest few years. The proportions calculated from these years have been used to apportion earlier years in the time series. Calculated in this way, the time series assumes a lack of change in the regional distribution of local authorities within a NUTS3 region, which may not give a true reflection of the activity taking place in those areas.
The industry classification is the 2007 Standard Industrial Classification of Economic Activities (SIC 2007) which classify business establishments and other standard units by the type of economic activity in which they are engaged.
