Discretionary Housing Payment - Overall limit (8272) Metric type
- Help text
- The Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP) overall limit is taken from the Housing Benefit subsidy circulars. It is set at a limit of 2.5 times the DHP allocation for that financial year. This circular provides details of money the government pays local authorities to administer Housing Benefit and other financial matters.
Since 2011-12, additional DHP government contribution funding has been made available to enable LAs to provide transitional support to claimants as they adjusted to the HB Welfare Reforms.
Once an authority has reached their overall cash limit it cannot award any more DHPs. If a local authority awards above this limit, they are breaking the law. The legislation which specifies the overall limit on expenditure is Article 7 of The Discretionary Housing Payment (Grants) Order 2001.
