- This is the percentage of the population aged 15 to 24 screened for chlamydia. Specifically, this is all chlamydia tests (asymptomatic screens and symptomatic tests) undertaken in 15 to 24 year olds attending sexual health services (SHS) and community-based settings who are residents in England. Data excludes people accessing services located in England who are residents in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland or abroad. Please note: the England total Includes tests which did not have sufficient location information to be attributed to a local authority of residence. The chlamydia detection rate amongst under 25 year olds is a measure of chlamydia control activities. It represents infections identified (reducing risk of sequelae in those patients and interrupting transmission onto others). Increasing detection rates indicates increased control activity: it is not a measure of morbidity.
Chlamydia is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection in England, with rates substantially higher in young adults than any other age group. By diagnosing and treating asymptomatic chlamydia infections, chlamydia screening can reduce the duration of infection, which will reduce an individual's chance of developing complications, and also reduce the time when someone is at risk of passing the infection on, which in turn will reduce the spread of chlamydia in the population.
Numbers between 1 and 4 with a population less than 10,000 are suppressed. Where counts for Isles of Scilly or City of London are between 1 and 4, these are combined with Cornwall or Hackney respectively.
