Help text
This is the percentage of pupils in state funded primary schools meeting the expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics (RWM) at key stage 2 (KS2) with Special Educational Needs (SEN) Support.

The expected standard in reading and mathematics is a scaled score of 100 or above. The expected standard in writing is a teacher assessment of 'working at the expected standard' (EXS) or 'working at greater depth within the expected standard' (GDS).

The new expected standards were designed to be broadly similar but are not equivalent to an old level 4b. The performance descriptors, used by teachers in the standard setting process, were developed with an understanding of the performance of pupils working at level 4b. However, given the curricula differences, there is not a direct equivalence between the new expected standard and level 4b in previous years and data pre-2016 are not directly comparable.

A child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her. A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or has a disability which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post-16 institutions.

SEN support - Extra or different help is given from that provided as part of the school's usual curriculum. The class teacher and SEN Coordinator (SENCO) may receive advice or support from outside specialists. This category replaces the former ?School Action? and ?School Action Plus categories.

All children in state funded primary schools, including most academies and free schools, are required to take part in key stage 2 national curriculum assessments before they more to secondary school. Data is not available for 2020 and 2021 as assessments were cancelled in these years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
