Progress score at the end of key stage 2 in writing (6101) Metric type
- Help text
- This is the average Progress score per pupil for writing in state funded mainstream primary schools. First introduced in 2016 it aims to capture the progress that pupils make from the end of key stage 1 to the end of primary school. Any amount of progress a pupil makes contributes towards a school's progress score.
Progress scores are calculated for each of reading, writing and mathematics, they are not combined. Progress scores are relative measures, it compares pupils' achievement with the average of all pupils nationally who had a similar starting point (or 'prior attainment'), therefore the national average score for mainstream schools is zero.
Interpreting a school's Progress score: Progress scores will be centred around 0, with most schools within the range of -1 to +1. A score of 0 means pupils in this school on average do about as well at KS2 as those with similar prior attainment nationally. A positive score means pupils in this school on average do better at KS2 as those with similar prior attainment nationally. A negative score means pupils in this school on average do worse at KS2 as those with similar prior attainment nationally. A negative score does not mean that pupils did not make any progress; rather it means they made less progress than other pupils nationally with similar starting points.
Progress results are calculated for a school based on a specific cohort of pupils. A school may have been just as effective but have performed differently with a different set of pupils. To account for this natural uncertainty 95% confidence intervals around Progress scores are provided as a proxy for the range of scores within which each school's underlying performance measure can be confidently said to lie.
The description 'state-funded mainstream primary schools' refers to those schools maintained by the local authority, including academies, free schools and city technology colleges (CTCs) but exclude state-funded special schools, independent schools, independent special schools, non-maintained special schools, hospital schools, special academies and pupil referral units. Figures for hospital schools and pupil referral units are excluded. The 'England state-funded schools' figures here may be slightly different from the 'England state-funded schools only' figures in the national tables. The figures presented here have been calculated on the same basis as the LA figures in this table (i.e. including pupils with missing results or pending maladministration). Data is not available for 2020 and 2021 as assessments were cancelled in these years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
