- This is the number of maintained schools in the local area that are subject to special measures as at 31 August for the academic year reported.. Schools subject to special measures are those that, when inspected, were failing to give their pupils an acceptable standard of education and in which the persons responsible for leading, managing or governing the school were not demonstrating the capacity to secure the necessary improvement in the school. This was previously reported as NI 89a.
