Number of children and young people with an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan enrolled on traineeships (5389) Metric type
- Help text
- This is the total number of children and young people (aged 0-25) with a statement of Special Educational Needs (SEN) or an Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan undertaking apprenticeships. Figures taken on January school census date.
Traineeships are an education and training programme involving work experience which aim to help young people prepare for an apprenticeship or other sustainable employment. Traineeships equip young people with the skills and workplace experience they need to compete successfully for apprenticeships and jobs; and may also support progression into further education or training.
EHC plans were introduced from September 2014 as part of a range of SEND reforms. A pupil has a statement of SEN or an EHC plan when a local authority issues one following a formal assessment. This document sets out the child's needs and the extra help they should receive.
General FE and tertiary colleges/HE includes General Further Education & tertiary colleges, special colleges (agriculture, horticulture, art & design and performing arts) and specialist designated colleges. Further Education courses studied in Higher Education institutions are also included in this figure.
From 2023, the data collection changed from aggregated figures at local authority level, to a person level collection. This has been a major change in approach and as such care should be taken with comparisons across this period.
