- Help text
- This is the total number of pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) where the primary type of need is 'social, emotional and mental health' at special schools, based on where the pupil attends school.
Social Emotional and Mental Health was added as a new type in 2015, the previous type of Behaviour, Emotional and Social Difficulties has been removed although it is not a direct replacement.
It is based on information provided by pupils with SEN on their primary need and, if appropriate, their secondary need. Information on primary need only is given here.
The coverage for 2015 is different to previous years pupils who were formerly School Action but have transferred to SEN support are now required to provide a type of need, therefore it is not possible to make direct comparisons with previous years.
Schools includes maintained and non-maintained special schools and special academies, including free schools. Excludes nursery schools, independent schools and pupil referral units.
National and regional totals and total SEN across Local Authorities have been rounded to the nearest 5. There may be discrepancies between totals and the sum of constituent parts.
