Miles of road maintained by Local Authorities (478) Metric type
- Help text
- This is the total length of roads maintained by local authorities, in miles. This is calculated by adding the major principal roads and all minor roads length totals together. The figure excludes trunk motorways, rural trunk roads and urban trunk roads.
For most motorways and many of the long distance rural ‘A’ roads are trunk roads, the responsibility for their maintenance lies with the Secretary of State. They are managed by Highways England, the Welsh Government and the Scottish Government (National Through Routes). Some London Boroughs have roads maintained by TfL.
Private roads are considered to be road not maintained at public expense. For major roads, private roads (usually toll roads, tunnels and bridges) are included in the road length figures as they are accessible to the general public. For minor roads, private roads are not included in the road length figures as they are not usually accessible to the general public.
