Number of GPs in an area (3712) Metric type
- Help text
- This indicator is a count of General Practitioners in a local authority. It was derived by the LGA to give a sense of health service provision in each authority.
It was derived from both the National General Practice Profiles Practice Inclusion list by Public Health England (http://tinyurl.com/odfeocw), which provides address details of GP surgeries in England, and the General Medical Practitioners list by HSCIC (http://tinyurl.com/m3go89k), which provides names and surgery addresses of all active General Practitioners in England.
Cases from the HSCIC list were excluded if listed as working at a surgery not listed in the Public Health England Practice Inclusion list. Criteria for inclusion on the National General Practice Profiles Practice Inclusion list (Public Health England) are: The practice is listed in the Quality and Outcomes Framework 2013/14; The practice is listed in ADS (Attribution Data Set GP-Registered Populations, HSCIC); The practice list size is > 900 patients. These revised (2014) criteria mean that very few practices have been excluded.
Postcodes were matched to a local authority using the ONS National Statistics Postcode Lookup (NSPL) (https://geoportal.statistics.gov.uk), providing an estimate of the number of GPs within each local authority. To calculate the crude ratio of GPs in each authority per 10,000 population, the number of GPs in each authority was multiplied by 10,000 and then divided by the ONS population count for the authority.
