Ratio of opticians per 10,000 population (3709) Metric type
- Help text
- This indicator is a crude rate of opticians per 10,000 population in a local authority. It was derived by the LGA to give a sense of health service provision in each authority and was sourced from the Health and Social Care Information Centre's Organisation Data Service publication Optical Sites. This list provides address details of all opticians in England (http://tinyurl.com/qct4t2x). Postcodes were matched to a local authority using the ONS National Statistics Postcode Lookup (NSPL) (https://geoportal.statistics.gov.uk), providing an estimate of the number of opticians within each local authority. To calculate the crude ratio of opticians in each authority per 10,000 population, the number of opticians in each authority was multiplied by 10,000 and then divided by the ONS population count for the authority. This data has been supplied to the ODS by the optical sector. ODS cannot confirm registration or approval of listed opticians by the General Optical Council, nor the currency and accuracy of the data, as a direct up-to-date feed of information from the sector has yet to be established therefore this data should be used with caution.
