Figures are for the maintained sector. Teachers in academies (including those that were previously maintained schools) are not included.

Occasional teachers (teachers that have a contract of less than one month, and are employed on the survey date) are not included.

Teachers are comprised of the following:

a. Teachers with qualified teacher status (QTS) or with the equivalent gained elsewhere in the EEA

b. Teachers without QTS, but with a professional qualification gained outside the EEA

c. Instructors without QTS, but with special qualifications in or experience of a particular subject.

This data refers to qualified teachers. Qualified teachers are those who have been awarded QTS either by successfully completing a course of initial teacher training (ITT) or through other approved routes.
