- Help text
- This metric is the number of unique visits received to the authority's website in the period (excluding visit from the authority's own staff) as a proportion of the resident population for the authority area.
Unique visits or unique visitors are the number of distinct individuals that visit a website in the period regardless of how many times they have visited the site in that period. The number of unique visits will be far less that the number of visits because a unique visit is only tracked if cookies are enabled on the visitors computer.
Due to the very nature of the internet visitors to a website are not restricted to a geographical area therefore the proportion of unique visitors can exceed the total population of an area leading to percentages over 100 per cent, this is particularly true of popular tourist areas and therefore this should be kept in mind when comparing different authorities.
