- DISCONTINUED DATA - Final available dataset: 2006-08. This is the estimated percentage of the population aged 16 and over that eat healthily. Healthy eating is defined as those who consume 5 or more portions of fruit and vegetables per day. A portion of fruit or vegetables was defined as an 80g serving. The indicator is a measure of a protective lifestyle factor. A diet rich in fruit and vegetables confers protective effects against the development of heart disease and certain cancers. It has been estimated that eating at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables a day could reduce the risk of deaths from chronic disease such as heart disease, stroke, and cancer by up to 20%.
