- Help text
- DISCONTINUED DATA - Final available dataset: 2006-08. This is the estimated number of the population aged 16 and over with obesity. Individuals are regarded as obese if they have a body mass index of 30 or more. The data is based on modelled estimates using individual-level data from the Health Survey for England.
There is an association between all cause mortality and obesity. Obesity decreases life expectancy by up to nine years. Obesity causes insulin insensitivity, which is an important causal factor in diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and stroke. Obesity is associated with the development of hormone sensitive cancers, and the increase mechanical load increases liability to osteoarthritis and sleep apnoea. Obesity carries psychosocial penalties. There are many routes by which obesity is a detriment to wellbeing.
