- This is the percentage of the working age population who are claiming out of work benefit. This is based on the average monthly number of persons in the months April to March inclusive, claiming out of work benefit, as a percentage of the mid-year population aged 16-64.
There is strong evidence to suggest that work is generally good for physical and mental health and wellbeing, taking into account the nature and quality of the work and its social context, and that worklessness is associated with poorer physical and mental health.
