Children living in income deprived households (2010) (number) (3277) Metric type
- Help text
- This is the number of children aged 0 to 15 years living in income deprived households. It is an indicator of the extent to which children in the area are living in poverty.
Income deprived households as defined in the Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI) are those either (a) receiving income support or job seekers allowance or incapacity benefit or pension credit or (b) not in receipt of these benefits but in receipt of working tax credit or child tax credit with and equivalised income below 60% of the national median before housing costs.
Growing up in poverty damages children's health and wellbeing, adversely affecting their future health and life chances as adults. Ensuring a good environment in childhood, especially early childhood is important. A considerable body of evidence links adverse childhood circumstances to poor child health outcomes and future adult ill health.
