Number of active enterprises (186) Metric type
- Help text
- This is a count of active enterprises in the area. Active enterprises are defined as those that had either turnover or employment at any time during the reference period.
This data is produced from an extract taken from the Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR). The publication focuses on changes to the registered business population, that is, those businesses registered at HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for Value Added Tax (VAT) and/or Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) and at Companies House.
This indicator is a refinement of the previous indicator covering the number of VAT-registered businesses at the start of the year: for instance, it recognises business activity occurring at any point in the year and it picks up PAYE-registered business as well as VAT-registered businesses. As a result of this being a more comprehensive measure, the figures are slightly higher than for the VAT-registered businesses measure.
It counts all businesses which have been active at any point within the year. These enterprises may have also closed within the time period but if they have been active during any part of the year they would have been counted as an active enterprise.
Figures for each period are rounded independently to the nearest 5 using controlled rounding.
