Did you know we have a dedicated powers and duties tool?
Available to LG Inform Plus subscribers, it provides information on what current legislation gives English and Welsh councils the power to do and what it requires them to do in law. Advanced searching and filtering options make it easy to find specific powers and duties based on legislation, business function and keyword, and results are easily exported in commonly used formats.

Total Number of Claimants (Alternative Claimant Count) (15421) Metric type
- Help text
- An alternative count of the total number of claimants of unemployment related benefits. The statistics measure claimant unemployment by modelling what the count would have been if Universal Credit had been fully rolled out since 2013 to provide insights to changes in the local labour market.

Figures show the number of people claiming unemployment related benefits modelled under Universal Credit conditionality. Statistics show those claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance (including Credits Only), or Universal Credit Searching for Work (excluding those awaiting a Work Capability Assessment), or those ‘additionals’ who would have been searching for work under Universal Credit had it rolled out. This comprises partners of Employment and Support Allowance or Income Support claimants, those claiming Housing Benefit or Child Tax Credit (but not earning more than the threshold, or disabled or with caring responsibilities).

Figures are not seasonally adjusted.
