Help text
This is the rolling 7 total number of new cases of COVID-19 (sum of daily cases from the preceding 7 days of reference week) calculated from data reported by Public Health England (PHE) which have been confirmed by pillars 1 and 2 of the UK Government's testing framework. This includes cases confirmed by the following: NHS and PHE ('Pillar 1'), commercial partners ('Pillar 2'). COVID-19 cases are identified by taking specimens from people and sending these specimens to laboratories around the UK to be tested. If the test is positive, this is a referred to as a lab-confirmed case.

Confirmed positive cases are matched to ONS geographical area codes using the the primary address postocde of the person tested. When the results are reported to PHE, they may contain more than one address, but the primary address used to link a case to a local authority is the address available in the centrally stored NHS Summary Care Record. In 92% of cases, for which both addresses area vailable, the primary address is within the same local authority as the alternate address. However, students pose a challenge to the established approach, as they may take some time to register with a General Practitioner (GP) in their university location if they do so, and therefore their registered GP address may not reflect where they are currently living. Some cases cannot be matched to a geographical area because postcode information is missing or received late. This is why the Local authority and Region counts do not add up to the England total.

Lab-confirmed positive cases are attributed to the day the first specimen was taken from the person being tested (the specimen date). Each day new cases are reported, but the dates they originate from cover the previous few days. Because of this, there are few cases reported for the most recent date, but this does not mean the epidemic is tailing off. Data from around five days ago can be considered complete. Data for recent days are constantly being revised as more information becomes available.
