Cumulative number of COVID-19 deaths (year to date) (13039) Metric type
- Help text
- This is the cumulative weekly number of registered deaths where coronavirus (COVID-19) was mentioned on the death certificate.
Weekly death figures provide provisional counts of the number of deaths registered in an area for which data are available, and the number of deaths for which the underlying cause was coded to respiratory diseases as defined in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems Tenth Revision (ICD-10).
From 31 March 2020 these figures also show the number of deaths involving coronavirus (COVID-19), based on any mention of COVID-19 on the death certificate. A doctor can certify the involvement of COVID-19 based on symptoms and clinical findings ? a positive test result is not required.
Provisional data on deaths registered in each week (ending on a Friday) are compiled at the end of the following week and data are published 11 days after the week ends. Weeks run from Saturday to Friday, and figures are normally published the following Tuesday.
The counts of deaths from specific conditions are updated with each weekly publication as the coding of the underlying cause is not always complete at the time of production.
Note: Bank Holidays can affect the number of registrations made within those weeks. Deaths are those registered in an area not the place of residence.
