Number of prison healthcare services in an area per 1,000 people (10331) Metric type

- This metric is derived by the LGA (Local Government Association) from the CQC (Care Quality Commission's) Care Directory file, the file contains a complete list of the places in England where care is regulated by CQC. Using the National Statistics Postcode Lookup, we have counted the number of prison healthcare services located in an area and then created a crude rate per 1,000 resident population. This covers all health services provided in prisons, young offender institutions (YOIs) and immigration removal centres (IRCs). Some providers may be permanently based in the prison, YOIs or IRCs; others may be based elsewhere but provide outpatient clinical sessions within the prison.
Prison healthcare services can include a broad range of healthcare, for example general practice, dentistry, mental health, substance misuse, acute and end of life care. We would usually expect providers of prison healthcare services to cover one or more additional service types, depending on the type of service they are providing. They employ a broad range of health and social care professionals to meet the needs of people who use their services.
Examples of services that fit under this category:- Mental health in-reach teams
- Counselling, assessment, referral, advice and through-care (CARAT) teams
- Prison drug rehabilitation programmes
- Young offenders institutions
- Some immigration removal centres.
Data are extracted once a quarter and provide a snapshot in time. It should be noted that due to changes to postcodes a small proportion cannot be matched to the latest National Statistics Postcode Lookup file and are therefore excluded from these figures.
