Indices of Multiple Deprivation Circumstance collection

Barriers to Housing and Services Circumstance

The purpose of this Domain is to measure barriers to housing and key local services. The indicators fall into two sub-domains: ‘geographical barriers’ and ‘wider barriers’ which includes issues relating to access to housing such as affordability.Further detail on the Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) can be found at the following link: http://www.communities.gov.uk/publications/corporate/statistics/indices2010technicalreport

Crime Circumstance

The purpose of this domain is to measure the rate of recorded crime for four major volume crime types – burglary, theft, criminal damage and violence – representing the risk of personal and material victimisation at a small area level.Further detail on the Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) can be found at the following link: http://www.communities.gov.uk/publications/corporate/statistics/indices2010technicalreport

Education Skills and Training Deprivation Circumstance

The Education, Skills and Training Deprivation Domain measures deprivation in educational attainment, skills and training for children, young people and the working age population in a local area.Further detail on the Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) can be found at the following link: http://www.communities.gov.uk/publications/corporate/statistics/indices2010technicalreport

Employment Circumstance

This domain measures employment deprivation conceptualised as involuntary exclusion of the working-age population from the world of work.Further detail on the Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) can be found at the following link: http://www.communities.gov.uk/publications/corporate/statistics/indices2010technicalreport

Extent Circumstance

Based on the indices of multiple deprivation (IMD), this measure shows the proportion of a district's population living in the most deprived lower super output areas (LSOAs) in the country. In this case 'district' refers to all authority types other than county councils. LSOAs are small fixed geographic areas encompassing a population of approximately 1,000 people. In this measure, all of the people living in the 10% most deprived LSOAs in England are captured in the numerator, plus a proportion of the population of those LSOAs in the next two deciles on a sliding scale - that is, 95% of the population of the LSOA at the 11th percentile, and 5% of the population of the LSOA at the 29th percentile. This makes the cut-off point less abrupt for this measure than that adopted in the 2000 indices of deprivation. The district with a rank of 1 has the highest proportion of it's population living in the most deprived LSOAs in the country. The aim of this measure is to portray how widespread high levels of deprivation are in a district. It only includes districts which contain LSOAs which fall within the most deprived 30% of LSOAs in England. Therefore some districts do not have an overall score for this measure and they are given a joint rank of 309.Further detail on the IMD can be found at the following link: http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20100410180038/http://communities.gov.uk/publications/communities/indiciesdeprivation07

Health Deprivation and Disability Circumstance

This domain identi?es areas with relatively high rates of people who die prematurely or whose quality of life is impaired by poor health or who are disabled across the whole population. This domain measures morbidity, disability and premature mortality but not aspects of behaviour or environment that may be predictive of forthcoming health deprivation.Further detail on the Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) can be found at the following link: http://www.communities.gov.uk/publications/corporate/statistics/indices2010technicalreport

Income Deprivation Circumstance

The purpose of this domain is to capture the proportions of the population experiencing income deprivation in an area.Further detail on the Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) can be found at the following link: http://www.communities.gov.uk/publications/corporate/statistics/indices2010technicalreport

Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI) Circumstance

This is a ranking based on the percentage of children aged 0 - 15 in each lower super output area (LSOA) living in families that are income deprived - i.e. in receipt of income support, income based jobseeker's allowance or pension credit, or those not in receipt of these benefits but in receipt of Child Tax Credit with an equivalised income (excluding housing benefits) below 60% of the national median before housing costs. The LSOA with a rank of 1 is the most deprived. LSOAs are small fixed geographic areas encompassing a population of approximately 1,000 people.Further detail on the Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) can be found at the following link: http://www.communities.gov.uk/publications/corporate/statistics/indices2010technicalreport

Income Deprivation Affecting Older People Index (IDAOPI) Circumstance

The supplementary Income Deprivation Affecting Older People Index (IDAOPI) is a subset of the Income Deprivation Domain. This is based on the percentage of the population aged 60 and over who receive income support, income based job seekers allowance, pension credit or child tax credit claimants aged 60 and over and their partners (if also aged 60 or over). The lower super output area (LSOA) with a rank of 1 is the most deprived. LSOAs are small fixed geographic areas encompassing a population of approximately 1,000 people.Further detail on the Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) can be found at the following link: http://www.communities.gov.uk/publications/communities/indicesdeprivation07

Living Environment Deprivation Circumstance

The Living Environment domain aims to identify deprivation in the quality of the local environment both within and beyond the home. The domain consists of two subdomains which focus, respectively, on deprivations in the ‘indoors’ and the ‘outdoors’ living environment.Further detail on the Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) can be found at the following link: http://www.communities.gov.uk/publications/corporate/statistics/indices2010technicalreport

Overall Circumstance

The overall IMD 2007 describes the LSOA by combining information from all seven Domains: Income Deprivation, Employment Deprivation, Health Deprivation and Disability, Education Skills and Training Deprivation, Barriers to Housing and Services, Living Environment Deprivation, and Crime. These were combined in two stages; ? rst each Domain rank was transformed to a standard distribution – the exponential distribution. Then the Domains were combined using the explicit Domain weights chosen. The overall LSOA level IMD 2007 is then ranked in the same way as the Domain Indices.Further detail on the Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) can be found at the following link: http://www.communities.gov.uk/publications/corporate/statistics/indices2010technicalreport

Rank Circumstance

This measure is designed to give an indication of the number of people experiencing income deprivation at district level. In this case 'district' refers to all authority types other than county councils. The Income Scale score is a count of individuals experiencing this deprivation. This indicator ranks districts accoring to that score - a rank of 1 indicates that the district is the most deprived according to the measure and 354 is the least deprived.Further detail on the Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) can be found at the following link: http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20100410180038/http://communities.gov.uk/publications/communities/indiciesdeprivation07
